Infrared Photography?

I know some of you photogs might be able to help me out, (/prod slave_to_anime) but I've really been wanting to dabble in infrared photography. I've considered at some point sending my Canon Digital Rebel (300D) in to get converted to infrared only, but as that is the only camera I have at the moment (*HOPEFULLY* might be getting some money towards the 40D as a graduation present) I obviously need a camera that can shoot in visible light as well. My camera does pass the "remote control" test where you point the remote control and take a picture to test if the infrared light from the remote appears, so I suppose I could put a filter on, but from all indications it doesn't work all that well, you can't see through the lens to compose the photo (so you have to constantly take the, and you need a tripod. So I suppose the other option would be to convert my point and shoot (Olympus C-750) or buy another camera that is IR sensitive. Cost is also another issue, since I don't have a ton of money, and really can't afford to spend more then $100 to play around with infrared at the moment.
I just don't know what would be the best route to go about experimenting in infrared. Any photographers have advice?

Jo-Anns is closed until further notice. Apparently the city of Poway up through Pomerado Road has been ordered to evacuate- which is right where I work. I hope everyone is ok!
The rest of my classes were cancelled today. I have yet to find out if the campus will be open tomorrow or not. The air wasn't too bad at school, but they sky was pretty gray with just a bit of a blue right at the zeinth, and you could definetly smell the smoke, though it wasn't as bad as it was yesterday in Poway.
Still don't know if I teach today or not. Gave my teacher a call, but haven't heard back yet. From checking on the Sweetwater Union School District page, it appears that all schools in the county are closed tomorrow, so there's a good chance that there is no band practice today.
Everyone, please be safe! EDIT: Apparently SDSU has been closed.

I know what you're thinking... It's about time!
Finally buckled down and got around to editing almost all the photos from AX this year. Still haven't uploaded the pictures of the WoW gathering, which is on my point and shoot, but got all the ones off my SLR. I'm rather happy how they turned out, but learned quite a bit from this last batch of photos:
- I underexpose probably half of my photos. - Remember to check ISO before shooting! There were a couple of times I was shooting with ISO 400 in bright light, because I forgot to switch from being inside! - Get more comfortable shooting manual in a wide array of lighting conditions, and in general, shooting in manual itself. - The curves and shadow/highlight tools are your friend (Oh thank you Photoshop CS!) - Get over the fear, and start shooting in RAW. Or at the very least RAW+jpg. Time to go get another memory card... - Don't frame photos so tightly- leave more space for cropping. - I really need to be more creative with my photos, since a lot of them a rather, blah. I suck at giving suggestions for poses to cosplayers.
As my website isn't up yet (don't even have a web host yet! Bob, can you talk to Joe for me?), and these photos are long overdue, I'm posting them on my photobucket for the time being. I hope you enjoy!
Take me to the photos!

Wanted: Models for Photoshoot

I'm looking for someone who would be interested in doing some modeling for me for photos. I'm currently trying to work on a portfolio for my photography, and get some more experience working with models, since right now my only real experience working with models (and posing them) is in a cosplay environment, and I would like to expand my horizons, since I'm ultimately thinking of making a business out of my photography.
You need to either live in San Diego County, or be willing to drive to San Diego. I'm open to locations, such as the beach, Balboa Park, Downtown, UCSD/SDSU/USD, as long as they're within the county.
What you get: An extensive free photoshoot, and a web gallery of the photos in 400 x 600 resolution. If you're interested in originals, we can probably work something out. I can get high-quality professional prints, if desired, though for the cost of printing. This would be perfect if you're interested in putting together a modeling portfolio, or if you just want some pictures to show off. .
(Feel free to link this post, if you have any friends who might be interested)

So someone completely forgot and put off getting a hotel room for AX. x_X Way to go, me. So now that the hotels (even the extra ones just added less then a week ago) are COMPLETLY sold out, I'm not quite sure what I'm going to be doing that weekend. Anyone have space for an extra body plus a few costumes? I don't think Bob's planning on going to that one (except for maybe a day- though we really haven't discussed it), so it would probably just be me. Otherwise I might just come up for a day, since no way in hell am I driving up from San Diego more then once (I drove to and from Long Beach twice in one day before, and I'm NEVER doing that again), and getting a hotel up there then commuting is stupid too. I like hotels at cons for the convenience. I’m not going to pay out the nose for a hotel then have to drive a couple miles to get to the convention center only to pay some ridiculous sum for parking too.
Secondly, quick poll for you: What should Lisa do on Easter Weekend?
A. Drive to Anizona (most likely by herself) B. Fly to Anizona C. Fly to Sakura Con D. Stay home, save money and wear the costumes around the house or E. Suggest something better for her to do.

Edited from my post on the ALA staff boards...

After reading all of the complaints about ALA on cosplay.com and LJ, as a staff member I am really embarrassed and ashamed. I love this ALA, and to see so many of my friends who had previously said that ALA was one of their favorite cons now never wanting to ever come back because of the way they were treated really upsets me. And even though I am not part of con-security (which is what the vast majority of the complaints were against), as being one of the ALA department heads, I can’t help but feel as though I’m at fault. I feel that our actions have permanently damaged the reputation of the con. To see ALA being compared to something like Ani-Magic breaks my heart.
While I didn’t get harassed (maybe because I’m a department head, and a familiar face, or because I wasn’t in costume for the majority of the weekend and had my badge pinned to my chest), I saw a number of my friends being yelled at. That was just completely shocking to me.
I understand that there might be some cultural differences between some of the con staff and the con-attendees that may have led to some of the conflicts. The ALA security staff is largely from a sci-fi con background. Anime cons are a much different environment then sci-fi cons. The attendees are by far a much younger crowd (mostly late teens and twenty-somethings), and there is a lot more hall costuming then at a sci-fi con. Even though the con goers are younger, the majority of them are not children do not behave like children, and shouldn’t be treated as such. The term “adult supervision” that ALA uses has always had a bit of a sore-spot with me. As a young adult myself, it is incredibly frustrating and demeaning to be treated like an ignorant child. (I work for a fabric store and am subjected to this all the time because the majority of my customers are at least 30 years older then me). I do understand and sympathize with the need to maintain order and crowd control (I personally really liked the no-photo zone signs, as it kept traffic moving, but I felt that was enough and the nagging and yelling wasn’t needed). We young adults simply wanted to be treated as equal peers (especially in regards to fandom, since frankly why should age matter?) with respect. We don’t need our hand held, nor do we appreciate being talked down to.
Having had a similar really negative experience with “Badge-Nazis” at Ani-Magic, I am strongly against strict badge enforcing in public all-access areas. The hotel lobby and walk ways are public areas, and frankly we don’t have any right to be demanding badges in non-con exclusive space. Hopefully this won’t be an issue ever again, due to our location change. I might also add that badges were NOT being enforced at all at con-exclusive events. Not once was there a badge monitor posted outside of my room (LP5/music room). I have enough to worry about just running my events (especially since for the most part I am running things exclusively) that I do not have the time to check for badges. That is simply not my job.
For those of you who were harassed and treated poorly by convention staff, please give us a second chance! I know that Chaz, myself, and many other ALA staffers are reading all of your complaints and will be working hard to make sure that this mistake never happens again. I know I will personally strive to be as friendly and amicable that I can possibly be, and make sure every con-goer feels welcome. I know that ALA 2008 is going to be even bigger and better! I really hope you will come back next year, and please give us a chance to redeem ourselves. Plus, I’d miss seeing you!
With regrets, Lisa Gochnauer ALA Music Programming

I know most of you probably don't care, but my troll hunter, Vikkala hit level 60 today. For those of you who don't know, level 60 is the highest you can reach in World of Warcraft (until the expansion pack comes out anyway). It took me 6 months to level her up, but I finally did it. Now the real fun begins!

I know most of you guys work during the week, but would anyone be intrested in going to the fashion district sometime next week (after Comic Con). I almost always work during the weekends, so I can never make it then, but perhaps during the week? I have a ton of fabric I need to pick up if I want to start working on stuff for AM.

Jinyo- what kind of embroidery sewing machine do you have? Do you (or anyone else for that matter) know the difference between machines that have a built in computer and ones that are USB compatable? I kinda want to buy an embroidery machine one of these days, but I don't know if the $500 ones that don't have a computer built in are any good.

I got a problem in my PoliSci class last week that I’m absolutely stumped on. Maybe those of you out in LJ land can help:
Imagine that you are the leader of the PERFECT government. It doesn’t matter what kind of government- it’s just PERFECT. How do you convince your citizens that your government is PERFECT without actually describing the government.
Any ideas?
